Improving Maternal Health Around the World: A Clinic at a Time

Having a baby should be cause for celebration.

But, when a woman learns she’s pregnant in Bichena, Ethiopia, her family and friends don’t congratulate her. Instead, they wish her luck, knowing that, her odds of both her and baby surviving pregnancy and birth are much grimmer than in many other parts of the world.

In fact, in Bichena, Ethiopia a staggering 850 out of every 100,000 live births ends in the death of mother, baby, or both.

Not every death from maternal complications can be prevented, but many, many more can. To put things in perspective, only 18 out of every 100,000 live births in the U.S. lead to the death of the mother- and that rate is considered the worst in the Western world! We can do better.

Which is why we’re partnering with Clinic at a Time, a maternal health organization that helps to fund and build maternal health care clinics  in rural Ethiopia.

Because, one thing’s for certain, no mother or child should die from lack of proper resources or medical care. Every mother and child deserve the best possible start in life: safe maternity care during pregnancy, and access to quality medical care when complications do arise during birth and beyond.
